Happy six months to Cozy Crafter Crates! Or what I affectionately call my "box business". And it is true, boxes are a huge part of our business. In fact, we have shipped 477 boxes from my house to yours in the last six months!
But more important than the boxes are the handicrafts inside of those boxes. Every month since February, our subscribers have gotten a new handicraft kit in the mail. Today I want to highlight them to showcase what you can expect from Cozy Crafter Crates and you will get some new ideas for handicrafts that you can do in your homeschool or as a family activity.
February- String Art Heart Cards
Handmade cards are so fun to make and send! With this kit we put a twist on traditional string art and practiced embroidery skills. Working with needle and thread is good practice for hand-eye coordination. First we punched holes to outline a heart design on a piece of cardstock paper. Then using the needle and thread we sewed in and out of the holes we made. Using a specific pattern, we made several fun designs!
If you would like to try this handicraft, all you need is some thick paper, and a needle and heavy thread or thin yarn. Or you can grab a kit here!
March- Loom Knit Earwarmers
Get cozy with an earwarmer that you made yourself! Knitting with a peg loom is an easy way to weave warm winter gear. You can make hats, scarves, and headbands with a peg loom and some chunky yarn. With these kits from March we learned how to use a peg loom and made earwarmers. This was such a popular kit that we sold out within a month!
April- Amish Knot Rug
To celebrate Earth Day in April, we upcycled tshirts into rugs! Everyone learned an easy knotting technique and, with strips cut from tshirts, made an Amish knot rug. Upcycling is an important skill to learn as it reduces waste and teaches us to be resourceful and use what we have. Handicrafts that have been passed down from generation to generation often involve reusing materials to make something new. It is an important skill for us to pass onto the next generation!
May- Basket Weaving
This month we learned the ancient art of basket weaving. Basket weaving has been done for centuries, but is becoming a lost art. People groups from all over the world have different basket weaving techniques. Baskets serve a very practical purpose but they can also be a display of art and creativity. All you need are some basic basket weaving supplies and your imagination! You can get your own kit here to learn how to weave a simple reed basket.
June- Button Sewing Book Bags
The beginning of summer brings with it the start of summer reading programs at the library. And what better way to get ready for reading than with a new book tote! We practiced more needle and thread skills by learning how to sew on a button. We sewed those buttons onto the book bags in a pattern that spelled the word READ. You can do this simple handicraft with any canvas tote or bag, needle and thread, and some buttons! A life-saving tip is to use heavy upholstery thread that is waxed. It minimizes the chance of your thread breaking and it doesn't tangle as easily. Get creative and spell your own words and make designs. Or you can purchase a kit already prepped for you here!
July- Wool Felted Soap
The most recent kit we sent out included a handicraft that was a bit different and a lot more bubbly! We learned the art of wet felting and made our own wool felted soap bar. Felting wool is a fun and satisfying handicraft and can be done so many different ways. And as a bonus, it requires very little wool and is easy enough for beginners! So get some wool and discover all the creative ways that you can felt it onto soap or make it into 3D objects or create pictures! We will be doing more of this type of handicraft in the future. But if you would like to try it out today, buy a wool felting kit here!
What an amazing six months it has been! And honestly this "box business" has surpassed my wildest dreams! I am so grateful to get to share these handicrafts with all of you and I cant wait to see where it takes us in the future. All I know is that we are going to have a whole lot of cozy crafting fun and learn lots of useful skills along the way!
